  Accidents and UK car insurance

If you are involved in an accident here are a number of tips and pointers for getting the correct information for your UK car insurance claim.
  • Don't leave the scene.

  • If there are people hurt then call for medical assistance.

  • Provide basic first aid, but be sure not to move anybody as this can exacerbate injuries.

  • Call the police if the accident is severe. Be sure to take note of the police officer you deal with and the station from which he operates. Ask the PO about the accident report, when it will be filed and how you can trace its progress.

  • Try to gather as much information on the spot as possible. Try to get hold of the names, addresses and contact details of any eyewitnesses before they leave the scene.

  • If you cannot produce your insurance certificate at the time of the accident then it is necessary to do so at a police station within 24 hours.

  • If there is any damage to persons, vehicles, property or animals then you will be required to give your details to anyone who has reasonable grounds for requesting them.

  • It is best not to discuss who you think caused the accident or where the blame lies with other parties as this could cause complications for you and your insurance company when dealing with your claim.

  • It is a condition of your policy that you must contact your insurance company even if you do not intend to make a claim.

There are also certain observations you should make and record for purposes of UK car insurance claims. These are:

  • The date and time of the accident.

  • If you have a camera or video recorder with you then try and get shots of the vehicles and the damage to them before they are moved.

  • The location and address of the location.

  • The weather at the time of the accident and the road conditions.

  • The direction and speed at which each of the drivers involved were travelling before the accident.

  • Try to write a salient account or summary of the accident and how it occurred, from start to finish.

  • Be sure to record the registration number, driver's license information and insurance details from each of the drivers involved in the accident.
